All of my life I have heard rumors about people who loved their jobs so much they would do the job even if they did not get paid. I considered these rumors to be in the same category as Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy ? nice, dreamy concepts, but not a reality for me.
Not that I haven?t been employed most of my life. I have been, just not in jobs that I would have done had I not have gotten paid for it! The telecommunications industry had been kind to me. However, I doubt that I would have stayed there for as many years as I did, had it not been so financially rewarding for me.
Later in life, I became an attorney; which, it turns out, I will NOT do for any amount of money! (Becoming a lawyer was a foolish decision for me, as I?m much more of a lover than a fighter...)
I asked professional career counselors about the work-so-good-I'd-do-it-for-free fable. They said it was true, some people did feel that way about their chosen careers. However, these career counselors were unable to discover an avenue that I could take to get to that place in my own life.
Although I am a people-person who enjoys a lot of hobbies (crafts, gardening, fishing, traveling) there just did not seem to be a way for me to make a living at playing.
For more than 25 years I have enjoyed volunteering my time mentoring and helping women new to recovery learn how to live happy, joyous, and free lives, one day at a time. For me this activity has continued to be a labor of love that I would not and could not ever receive payment for. |
